All over the world civil societies have power to influence individual behavior and the society at large on various issues bedeviling the society including FGM/C.
In Puntland, civil society plays key roles in pushing for new laws, programmes, policies or strategies on FGM/C reduction, through holding all stakeholders to account on their commitments; also in identifying the lack of joined-up government responses to FGM/c; and in ensuring that national policy making involves FGM/C eradication strategies.
Puntland’s civil societies role in FGM/C eradication initiatives:
- leading grass-roots mobilization and advocate on the eradication of the practice
- supporting the wide dissemination of information on risks and dangers of FGM/C
- forming networks and action groups to promote the eradication of FGM/C practice
- advocate and support FGM/C eradication programmes and education campaigns
- monitor and work with other stakeholders such as private sector entities;
- contribute to putting knowledge and evidence into practice
